The route is similar to 2015, with minor alterations.

  • Day1: From East London north up the N6, past Queenstown to the Sterkstroom turnoff, then from Steynsburg to Middelburg.

  • Day 2: South across the Karoo, Middelburg via Graaff Reinet and Aberdeen to Willowmore.

  • Day 3: West via Oudtshoorn and the Huisrivier pass through the Klein Karoo to Barrydale.

  • Day 4: Into Stellenbosch via Montagu, Robertson, Villiersdorp and Franschhoek.

Each leg will be just under 300 km’s long.  Grandads Army will be divided into three teams and each team will ride 100 km’s per day for each of the 4 days.

A course through the Karoo has been chosen with cycle safety in mind.  The cyclists will ride 1160 of the 1296 km course, the remaining distance not being really safe for cycling.

After a rest day, Grandads Army will ride the RBMR2 Winelands Cycle Tour on Sunday 11 December 2016 together.
