Meet Grandads Army

They are a group of social cyclists, friends of the late Rob Burton.

 

Colin Lazarus, the Lance Corporal.

Longest serving but lowest ranking member of Grandads army. He is a former road runner who finished all big races well behind the Major. Colin Lazarus completed 9 “Argus” cycle tours; naively hoping for a PB each year. His day job: Paediatric Surgeon and WSU Academic Coordinator for EL. He is also a grandpa of three.

The “Captain” is our leader on the road. Former soccer player, Comrades runner and now veteran cyclist, he is tasked with whipping the Grandads into peak condition, maintaining discipline and grinding out maximum performance.

Richard Bind ,age 67 is a true granddad with 7 grandchildren. Richard  has cycled several Argus’s  . He comes from a road-running background. A “banting “ follower he has shed 17kg of weight preparing for the ride.

James Armstrong, the Rear Admiral.

James Armstrong is a 62 year old Engineer working for Government.  He grew up in Umtali and his family was good friends of the Burtons.  James is married to Pennith.  Together they have two boys who are also Engineers. He enjoys cycling, paddling, back packing, yogurt berry ice cream and beer.

Rodney Offord bought a mountain bike in 2010 as a reward for having shed 10kg. He accomplished his goal of completing the Argus Cycle Tour in 2011 and has ridden it every year since then. In 2015 he finished the Ride London-Surrey 100 in the UK. Rodney is married to Sharon and they have a son and daughter and two grandchildren.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Arthur Salzwedel, the Master Sergeant.

Arthur started cycling in 1964 after rugby at Hams. Won all sprint races in second season (Border Sprint Champs). He cycled seriously in 1969 & won Border Road Champs (160 km). Represented SA at World Masters track champs in Sydney Australia in 2008 & 2009 (won bronze in sprint in 2008). He represented SA again in 2010 in Portugal and won silver in time trial and bronze in sprint. No serious cycling since 2010. He is a grandfather of 16 and great grandfather of 5`1/2. Just finished building a 2 bed cottage.

Garth Voigt cycled the Argus cycle tour ten times. Many of those with the late Rob Burton.

Alison Langtree, the Sergeant Major.

This is the person actually in charge. Still wants to know if Sgt-Major is a higher rank than the Major. Current top female runner and Iron Man tri-athlete. Hates cycling. Only cycles so she can see Cape Town and travel more often.
