The third Rob Burton Memorial Ride.

A Trans-Karoo relay cycle from East London to Stellenbosch over 4 days,

starting on 8 October 2017.

Grandads Army rides from East London to Stellenbosch.

In November 2015, a group of East London social cyclists, the “Grandads Army”, completed the first Rob Burton Memorial Ride, raising just under a quarter of a million rand for the Eyabantwana – For the Children Trust.  In 2016, “Grandads Army” completed the ride again and raised a slightly larger sum.

The funds raised by the first ride were used by the Eyabantwana Trust to buy much needed surgical equipment for the management of burns for the Cecilia Makiwane Children’s operating theatre. Funds raised in the second ride have been allocated to the purchase of specialised shower facility and trolley for the dressing room of the Frere Burns Ward and to the refurbishing and painting of the ward.

It is in the Dressing Room that children have their dressings removed to allow the burns to be cleaned and dressed, something that is a painful and harrowing experience. Our desire is to improve the facilities in the Dressing Room to allow for the provision of care in as kind and pain free environment as possible.

In October this year, “Grandads Army” will once more undertake this epic Trans-Karoo ride in honour of Rob Burton and a second member of our team, Arthur Salzwedel, who died tragically last year after an accident on an early morning cycle ride.

The ride starts on Sunday 8th of October and will reach Stellenbosch on Thursday the 12th of October.

Funds raised by the Eyabantwana Trust in this year’s ride will be allocated to the purchase of specialised surgical instruments for the operating theatres of Frere and Cecilia Makiwane and to complete the refurbishing of the Frere Burn Ward.

More information about the work of the Eyabantwana Trust and the Rob Burton Memorial Rides can be found on the Trust’s website and the Rob Burton Memorial Ride Facebook page.
