Return to The third Rob Burton Memorial Ride.

Grandads Army triumph day 1!

Grandads Army about to start the 3rd Rob Burton Memorial Ride.

The Grandads Army of the Rob Burton Memorial Ride took to the road early hours this morning ready to tackle their 1160 km relay cycle from East London to Stellenbosch over 4 days,  in aid of the Eyabantwana Trust.

The “Army”, “Navy” and the “Air Force” left Caltex Beacon Bay at 05h30 this morning and made their way through to Middelburg via the N6. The three teams collectively completed the daunting 300 km cycle challenge, arriving in Middelburg at 16h00 this afternoon.

The wind and chill in the air proved to add to the challenges each cyclist experienced throughout day one. With the support of the backup-crew, vehicles were able to shield the cyclists from the wind, ensuring cyclists reached Middelburg wearing big smiles showcasing their first days achievement.

The group will rest at the Desert Inn this evening and tackle tomorrow’s journey through to Willowmore via Graaff Reinet and Aberdeen.
