The 2017 Route.

The route is similar to the one in 2016, with minor alterations.

  • Day 1 (Sun 8/10): From East London north up the N6, past Queenstown to the Sterkstroom turnoff, then from Steynsburg to Middelburg.

  • Day 2 (Mon 9/10): South across the Karoo, from Middelburg, via Graaff Reinet and Aberdeen to Willowmore.

  • Day 3 (Tue 10/10): West via Oudtshoorn and the Huisrivier Pass through the Klein Karoo and via the Tradouw Pass to Swellendam.

  • Day 4 (Wed 11/10): Into Stellenbosch via Ashton, Robertson, Villiersdorp and Franschhoek.

Each leg will be 300 km long or just under.  Grandads Army will be divided into three teams and each team will ride 100 km per day for each of the 4 days.

The course through the Karoo has been chosen with cycle safety in mind.  The cyclists will ride 1160 km ofthe 1296 km course, the remaining distance not being really safe for cycling.

On the fifth day, Thursday 12 October, Grandads Army will together ride the scenic Clarence Drive Road along the coast from north of Hermanus to Gordon’s Bay.

On the last day, Friday 13th, Grandads Army will enjoy a well-deserved celebratory Wineland lunch experience.
