Department of Paediatric Surgery

Where we are:
East London, South Africa

The Department of Paediatric Surgery at the East London Hospitals Complex (ELHC) is the main centre for paediatric surgery in the Eastern Cape Province.

With the aim of addressing the need for a surgical service for newborns and children in the Eastern Cape, Dr Colin Lazarus founded the Department of Paediatric surgery in 1995.

Together with Dr Milind Chitnis Dr Lazarus developed the service to be comprehensive and deal with a wide range of neonatal and paediatric surgical conditions and diseases.

Today the ELHC is the port of call for children from all over the Eastern Cape and the surgeons here treat children from birth through infancy to the age of 12 years.

The Department of Paediatric Surgery is also affiliated with the Walter Sisulu University and has a fully accredited training program. Doctors who enter the training program as registrars will receive wide ranging exposure to paediatric surgery.
